Welcome to our non-profit offshoot of Pet Behavior Consulting!
PBS Canine Behavior Support, Inc. was founded on the love, dedication and, yes, frustration that we see pet owners go through with getting the guidance, behavior support and training they need with their pet.
Here are two common scenarios that have come up time and again. Check them out and see if you can relate.
You desperately want your first dog. After researching and checking local rescues, you end up choosing a cutie patootie and you are SO EXCITED. The day arrives, you bring your dog home and the adventure begins.
Maybe that day or maybe a few weeks later you start seeing behaviors you aren’t quite sure how to handle. Growling when you take a bone away. Pulling on leash to get to other dogs while barking and wagging their tail. Growling or hiding when people arrive. Trying to bite the vet.
You call the rescue and they tell you to take a class. You find a class and try to take your dog but you can’t even make it through the second class because of barking, not taking food, and the instructor asking you to go behind a barrier where you can’t even see or hear.
Sound familiar?
How about this one?
You agree to foster a dog for a rescue and they deliver an adorable southern import to you. You were told the dog has some issues so you are ready and up for a challenge! You’ve raised dogs your whole life. You work hard on the dog and things just seem to get more complicated.
After some aggressive behavior, you reach out to the rescue and they say they are unable to take the dog back and unable to invest in training. You fund some behaviorist visits and private lessons, plus medications and a consult with a veterinary behaviorist. Nothing seems to be helping.
Determined to make it work, you keep trying. There are many days you cry. You get advice from so many people. It feels hopeless. You don’t know the right thing to do but it becomes more clear that, whatever it is, you can’t do it despite giving it your all.
It looks like your options are euthanasia or adopting this “foster dog” that was supposed to be a 2-3 week commitment. It’s a choice that makes you feel like you’ve been punched in the gut.
We have so many scenarios and stories to tell. Real things that happen every day to dog owners with good intentions.
CBS can help in the following ways:
- offer guidance and counseling about options and resources
- accept dogs into a program to receive training, funded by the donations of volunteers
- offer therapy dog certification courses as a way to connect with the public and the tuition for the course will go into our charity so owners can apply for funding to do the necessary training
- give dog owners a list of resources
- offer a monthly in-person support group for owners of difficult dogs. Socialize, see how many people are in the same boat and talk to professionals about dogs and dog behavior
What CBS Does NOT Do:
- Rehome aggressive dogs for dog owners
- Provide medication or medication suggestions for dog owners
Our information will continue to grow. If you are a person who would like to help the charity, email elise@caninebehaviorsupport.com.
